UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
