The people of Israel observe second remembrance of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The representative said the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- Post-war management of the area
Public Sentiment
In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No location seems like home now and until every captive come back none of us will be secure."
"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel says forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that about the majority of the population prefer the hostilities to finish in return for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli attacks persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the night comes, the dread comes with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my youngest child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the remains of six people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of that area reported two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
