The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
