The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
