Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Oil Shipments to India in Defiance of Washington Pressure

In a unambiguous signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to provide “unbroken” shipments of energy resources to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Signal Aimed at the United States

Putin's comments, delivered Friday, was widely seen to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, who have sought to urge New Delhi into curtailing its close relations with Moscow. This comes is in response to previous Washington's moves, including the imposition of import duties on India because of its buying of Russian oil.

“Russia is a trustworthy exporter of energy resources and anything necessary for the development of India’s energy sector,” Putin stated. “Russia is prepared to keep securing the uninterrupted supply of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not mentioning oil specifically, supported the focus by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and crucial pillar of the India-Russia cooperation.”

Defying American Pressure

In the lead-up to the talks, during a television interview, Putin had criticized American pressure over India's oil imports. Putin stated, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, why shouldn’t India claim the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival was his maiden journey to India since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a clear effort to project that the bond between the two leaders remained intact.

An Unusual Greeting

Employing an unusual gesture, Prime Minister Modi met Putin as he disembarked. They shared a warm hug like close allies before enjoying a private dinner on Thursday evening.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “built on mutual respect and profound confidence.”

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The bilateral summit produced several significant pacts regarding military and trade relations. One significant result was the completion of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which aims to boost mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars per year by the target year.

Additionally vowed to reshape their defence ties. Even as Russia continues to be India's primary source of defence equipment, the volume has diminished in recent years as India aims to widen its sources.

The joint statement highlighted cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of sophisticated defence platforms, although direct details of deals for the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.

Ultimately, Russia and India restated that amid the “present intricate, difficult, and volatile international environment, Russian-Indian ties remain durable to external pressure.”
