Celebratory Displays along with a Toast for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice over Deal Bringing Back Captives
The declaration of an agreement expected to lead to the freeing captives detained within Gaza for over two years has generated delight and comfort across the nation.
An organization that has advocated for the release of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The agreement—still requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinet—involves the return of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees serving life sentences in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
So far, 148 hostages have come back—largely through previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been recovered and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes took place at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered before the deal being signed.
A crowd started applauding and moving to music under American and Israeli banners—a female attendee displaying a placard saying: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
Another, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We need to see them come back home to their loved ones.”

Families Celebrate Using Pyrotechnics
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the announcement of his impending returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker said as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The delight could be felt throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv following the news.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then toasting “To life”, which means “to life”. She has been campaigning for the freedom of her friends, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage on 7 October 2023, with her remains recovered from a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in pushing for a deal that brings the homecoming of everyone still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is actually happening. We have waited for so long and now it’s here,” he expressed.
He said he felt “broken” that his cousin will not be among those returning home yet felt “radiant with happiness” for the relatives of the hostages who are finally coming back.
Eitan Horn was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother.
Cautious Optimism from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living “in a dream”.
“We are immensely thankful to President Trump and everything he has done for us. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it was still too early to celebrate.
“Before the final captive returns, we won’t open the champagne. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she said.
“Numerous events might occur until the last moment which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who participated in the efforts and ensure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only once we have the last hostage back home.”
Eitan was captured from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
